The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about following this charming family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
