An extensive industrial complex situated in the suburbs of the capital is addressing nuclear contamination following a government team found presence of the hazardous element Caesium-137 at 22 production plants inside the area, which includes businesses that export frozen seafood.

Investigation and Detection of Pollution

The country's authorities launched an investigation after the American FDA detected Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a consignment of frozen coated shrimp sent by a local company.

Officials released an advisory instructing suppliers and retailers to discard the goods and not sell it, although the found amount was far below the agency's intervention threshold. They noted that the amount of Caesium-137 it had found would not present an acute risk to the public.

The FDA explained: “The main health effect of concern after extended, ongoing low dose exposure (eg through consumption of contaminated products or liquid over time) is an increased chance of the disease, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells.”

Extensive Contamination and Medical Checks

Radioactivity tests showed at least 22 plants in the industrial zone were affected. The official team did not identify the twenty-one additional production facilities, but confirmed they would promptly receive decontamination procedures conducted by Indonesia's nuclear agency.

The environment minister declared that residents living in highly polluted areas would be relocated until the location was decontaminated, adding that the well-being of the residents was the “top priority”.

Health authorities also performed examinations on local employees and people located close to the manufacturing zone, identifying 9 individuals who tested positive for exposure to Caesium-137. These individuals were referred to a medical facility before being cleared to go back.

Decontamination and Containment Plans

The affected locations will right away receive decontamination procedures by Indonesia's atomic energy institute. Authorities have also selected the site of a scrap metal factory as an isolation center for contaminated goods.
