Cameroon Opposition Figure Confronts Court Action Over Post-Election Violence, Authorities Says

The nation's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has announced that opposition leader Tchiroma Bakary will face legal action over accusations that he incited "violent post-election demonstrations".

A minimum of 4 protesters have been killed during confrontations between police and military and protesters since the presidential election on 12 October, with President Paul Biya, aged 92 winning an eighth term in office.

Tchiroma Bakary maintains that he was the true winner, a claim disputed by the incumbent party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Minister's Allegations

Recently, the interior minister alleged Tchiroma Bakary of organising what he described as "illegal" rallies resulting in the loss of lives, and also rebuked him for declaring victory in the electoral contest.

He further stated that Tchiroma Bakary's "accomplices responsible for an rebellious scheme" will also face legal action.

Poll Figures

Paul Biya, who took control in the early 80s and is now the world's oldest head of state, obtained the October 12 presidential election with 53.7% of the vote, compared to 35.2% for the challenger, according to the constitutional court.

Leader's Stance

Issa Tchiroma is remains silent to the official announcement to prosecute him, but he had previously announced that he rejected a fraudulent outcome - and that he was undaunted of being detained.

On election result day, he reported that gunmen opened fire on demonstrators assembled near his home in the city of Garoua, fatally wounding at least 2 people.

Investigation Announced

Earlier this week, the interior minister announced that an inquiry would be initiated into unrest prior to and following the publication of the vote outcome.

"Throughout the violence, some of the perpetrators lost their lives," he said, without offering a exact count of protesters who have been lost their lives in the clashes.

Nji added that several officers of the police and military also suffered significant wounds.

Present Conditions

Even though the interior minister maintained the condition across the country was now stable, demonstrators continue to protest in some parts of the country, especially in urban centers, where demonstrators mounted obstructions on Tuesday, and ignited tires on the roads.

Analysts warn that the post-electoral violence could push the nation into a governmental instability.
