Aaron Rai Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off after a rollercoaster final round of competition.
The Englishman sank a crucial birdie from just over eight foot to seal the victory, echoing his sole prior tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off win over Fleetwood.
Final Round Drama
The champion started the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, 67 final round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last hole.
Play-Off Decider
This set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to take the title and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” stated the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to describe at the present how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”
